The decline in primary and final energy intensity, both of which improved in 2003, is quickening, with a nearly identical reduction of 1.6% and 1.7%, respectively. These reduction rates are significantly better than they have been since both 1990 (-0.4% and -0.9%) and 1982 (-0.2% and -1.0%). Higher prices lead to more cost-conscious behaviour in all sectors, particularly transportation, which has benefited from a combination of favourable factors.
